Our Story
It Started With a Watch and the Moon
LunarDial® began with a simple idea: what better way to display the watch worn on the Moon than on the Moon itself?
As the owner of an Omega Speedmaster, I wanted somewhere to place my watch when it wasn't on my wrist. There are plenty of watch stands, boxes and display cases available, but none of them really told the story of the watch.
The Speedmaster isn't simply a watch. Its connection with space exploration and the Moon is part of what makes owning one so special.
So I decided to make the display I couldn't find. The first was a concept, a moon globe bought online and converted using parts from broken watch winders, it was rough, but it proved the idea, and as rough as it looked, the watch still sat inside and felt right..
Turning an Idea Into Something Real
What initially sounded like a relatively simple project quickly became anything but.
The first challenge was creating a Moon that looked convincing while also functioning properly as a watch display. Early prototypes proved the concept, but they also taught us what needed to change.
Different designs were explored, prototypes were printed, dimensions adjusted and the watch holder developed until the watch sat exactly where it should.
The lunar surface itself became just as important. If we were going to put our name to it, it needed to look like the Moon rather than simply a textured sphere.
That led to a much more detailed model based on real lunar terrain, carefully adapted and engineered into a functional display.
It took considerably more work than originally expected.
But that became part of the point. The prototype had texture, a bit too much, our first "production" model was too smooth, no detail, so we moved on to a designer who really got the concept and created what we have now.
Made in Small Batches
LunarDial® displays aren't anonymous, mass-produced accessories arriving by the container load.
The original Moon display is produced in small batches using high-resolution resin 3D printing. Each piece then goes through a hands-on finishing process before being inspected, assembled and prepared for its new owner.
Modern manufacturing makes it possible for an idea like this to become a real product without compromising the character that made us want to create it in the first place.
There will inevitably be small variations between individually finished pieces. We think that's rather appropriate for something inspired by a surface where no two craters are quite the same.
More Than a Watch Stand
Some watches have stories that extend far beyond telling the time.
They've travelled to extraordinary places, accompanied remarkable people and been designed for environments most of us will never experience.
That thought has gradually become the philosophy behind LunarDial®.
Rather than simply making somewhere to put a watch, we want to create displays inspired by the stories, environments and engineering that made certain watches iconic.
The Moon is where that story begins.
Where it goes next, we'll see.

For watches with a story worth displaying.
